After the others had gone, Saviero Nunyez returned to the parlor where he extinguished all the lamps, save the one on the mantlepiece.

There, he lingered, gazing at a pair of photographs sitting side by side in matching silver frames. One was of his wife Marissol, taken a couple of years before her death. He preferred this portrait of her, captured in the fullness of her middle years, over others taken in her youth. Her face shone with the seasoned beauty and wisdom that only life experience brings. She had been his best friend and most trusted advisor.

As he looked at the picture, he imagined what counsel she’d give him on this, the eve of the most dangerous night of his life.

Leave no detail to chance, Savi.

Was there something he was forgetting?

Though he reviewed everything about the plan in his mind once again, he could think of no flaw. He sighed and picked up the photo, kissed the glass covering Marissol’s smiling image, then replaced it next to the photo of a slim man in a formal black coat just entering middle age, clasping the hands of a ravishing, dark-haired young bride. Neither looked at the camera, but rather at each other, smiling.

Even after thirty-five years, Nunyez still felt the love of that day, undiminished.

“Goodnight, my darling,” he said, then, after switching off the lamp, he made his way upstairs to bed.
